Brussels by Night

Here it is : the first Brussels Open Air Festival will set the city alight on August 31st.

We already had the Fritkot, the Ommegang and beer culture on the list of Brussels' intangible cultural heritage… In 2023, clubbing was added to this esteemed list and recognized as a cultural heritage of Brussels!

Since the 60s and 70s, Brussels has seen the rise of disco and funk, with clubs becoming famous for their extravagant parties and cutting-edge music. Brussels began to attract international DJs and music lovers.

During the 80s, electronic music came to Brussels and the city became a central hub for techno, house, and new beat, a genre that originated in Belgium.

Since the beginning of the 2000s, Brussels has seen its clubbing scene diversify. The city became known for its inclusive and diverse nightlife, with venues catering to various subcultures and music genres.

After one of our long-standing clubs was threatened to close its doors, Brussels recognized the importance of club culture in the city’s vibrant landscape and made it a part of the cultural heritage. By doing this they made sure that the clubbing culture would be better protected and continue to evolve and maintain its unique identity.

Just over a year after, the City of Brussels and Brussels By Night are happy to announce the first edition of BRUSSELS OPEN AIR FESTIVAL!

For this occasion, seven actors of Brussels’ landscape will take over the most iconic squares of the city in 5 Open Airs.
