In recent years, the issue of sexual and gender-based violence has gained increasing attention, and it has become clear that it is a systemic problem that affects all aspects of society, including the nightlife industry.
The urgency to intervene and demand from the sector
Nightclubs, event organizers and all other festive promoters have come under increased scrutiny for their role in preventing and responding to incidents of sexual violence that occur within their events. In response to these challenges, Brussels Nightlife Federation has established a Care Team to support and accompany its members in addressing these issues.
So what is the Care Team?
It is a team of volunteers who intervene in events to ensure the comfort and well-being of all. The Care Team's mission is to promote awareness and reduce the risk of sexual and gender-based violence in nightlife as well as all kinds of violence and discrimination. They also provide assistance and referrals to victims and ensure that event organizers implement best practices to prevent and respond to incidents of violence.
The missions of the Care Team are, first of all, prevention by raising awareness of sexual and gender-based violence. Secondly, reaction via the care and redirection of victims and aggressors. Finally, support through follow-up with the organizers and the implementation of good practices.
How does it work?
Our Care Team Coordinator & Harm Reduction Manager train volunteers who are well-versed in the complexities of sexual and gender-based violence. They work closely with event organizers to develop and implement policies and procedures that promote safety and respect for all. They also provide training and support to venue staff, ensuring that they have the knowledge and skills to identify and respond to potential incidents.
The Care Team takes care of the events before, during and after the event. During the event, the Care Team volunteers (quite visible as in the picture above) give an entrance speech. They also make rounds in the venue to observe, listen and redirect people that need it to the "safe zone". If needed, they also hand out harm-reduction material.
